Who doesn't remember the introduction of Automotive SPICE® in the company when experts were confronted with the "How?" and "Why?" of the new standard. The introduction of the new standard "SPICE for Mechanical Engineering", which has been introduced as part of the Automotive SPICE® plugin concept a few months ago, is another example of this. Consultants and experts are repeatedly confronted with the hurdles, but also with the opportunities, of the introduction.
At the VDA Automotive SYS Conference in Potsdam, Germany, we therefore found the time has come for an exchange of these initial experiences. As an introduction to the topic, Rainer Dreves (Continental) presented the previous experiences of an assessor. In the course of several assessments in development projects, he encountered comprehension difficulties, problems with the time frame and other hurdles, but also exemplary examples. This was followed by field reports by Timo Karasch and Holger Höhn (both Process Fellows GmbH) on the introduction of the standard, which dealt with the typical questions and misunderstandings of mechanical developers. On the basis of the hurdles outlined above, the plenum collected further challenges, from which 4 topics were finally selected and dealt with in detail: "Testing in Mechanical Development", "Quality Assurance in Mechanical Development", "Differentiation of Systems according to Automotive SPICE® and Mechanical Systems" and the "Representation of Mechanical Development in the Project Life Cycle". The topics were discussed and common recommendations for companies and consultants were worked out, which should represent the beginning of a "guideline for the introduction". The quintessence, however, was that
1. this can only be the beginning of all recommendations; and
2. many introductions to the topic "Mechanical SPICE" will be necessary in order to convey the meaning, purpose and application of the
standard. We should not forget that the world of mechanics differs from software development in many respects.
If you have questions about the introduction of "Mechanical SPICE" or first experiences, our Process Fellows will be glad to help you!
